HMDA master plan covering 6000 sq km

Published & Updated as on - 2011-09-07

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) today issued a draft master plan till 2031 by when the area under the authority is expected to double to 18.4 million population, including 6.5 million workforce. HMDA has sought opinions and objections on the draft plan from the people within two months.

The government, in August 2008, had constituted HMDA by bringing an additional area of about 5,018 square km around the city of Hyderabad that was spread in 2,210 sq km under the erstwhile Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda), taking the total area under urban planning to around 7,228 sq km.

The total jurisdiction of the authority extends to all the 16 mandals of Hyderabad district, 22 mandals of Rangareddy district, 10 mandals of Medak, two mandals of Mahaboobnagar and five mandals of the neighbouring Nalgonda district.

The draft plan covers an area of 5,965 sq km that include the extended area of HMDA, 330 sq km of Outer Ring Road (ORR) Growth Corridor, 432 sq km of erstwhile Huda and 185 sq km of erstwhile Hyderabad Airport Development Authority outside ORR, according to an HMDA release.

The master plan proposes a radial-centric structure of development with new urban nodes and urban centres in all directions to promote balanced development in the Hyderabad metropolitan region with a peri urban zone all along the urban area, and hierarchy of circulation network to cater to the present and future travel needs of population and activities. The plan also integrates and consolidates the existing master plan in force outside the ORR.

The draft master plan will be displayed at various offices of HMDA apart from offering the executive summary of the mater plan for sale, it said.

The Hyderabad metropolitan region extends to Toopran on the north along the NH-7, Bhongir on the east along the NH-202, Chotuppal on south-east along NH-9, Yacharam on south along the Nagarjunasagar state highway and Kandukur along the Srisailam state highway, Shadnagar on south-west along the NH-7, Chevella and Aloor along the Vikarabad state highway, and Sangareddy on the west along the NH-9.

It includes Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Sangareddy and Bhongir municipalities and 849 revenue villages.
